Why did it happen ?

19 terrorists connected to the Islamic extremist organization al-Qaeda carried out the September 11 attacks. The purpose of the attacks was to protest what the organization believed to be the American government's actions towards the Islamic world, such as support for Israel, the presence of American forces in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq. al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden stated in a videotaped message released after the attacks that the attacks were a response to U.S. policies towards the Islamic world. He said, "We are continuing this policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy. All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al-Qaeda, in order to make the general's race there to cause America to suffer human, economic, and political losses."[12].
